Australia’s largest independent regional airline, Regional Express Airlines (REX) is based in Wagga Wagga and flies to over 30 destinations throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, including Albury, Mildura, Broken Hill, Armidale, Bourke, Dubbo and Orange.
Born out of the Ansett collapse, Regional Express Airlines (REX) was formed when a group of businessman banded together to save the regional operations of the failed carrier—apparently the only part of the Ansett business that was still turning a profit. In August 2002, they merged the two regional brands owned by Ansett, Hazelton and Kendell, streamlining their operations under the one banner.
Regional Express Airlines operates a combined fleet of 89 Swedish-built Saab 340 turboprop aircraft, each seating a maximum of 36 passengers. Among the fleet are several specially adorned aircraft, including the 2008 model VH-SBA whose livery is painted with a mural of the City of Wagga Wagga.
Another aircraft is painted with a caricature of former National Party MP Kay Hull, who helped the founders of Regional Express Airlines in the initial stages of setting up the carrier. Most aircraft in the fleet also bear the airline’s motto: "Our heart is in the country".
Regional Express Airlines trains the pilots of tomorrow through the Australian Airline Pilot Academy, which it owns and operates out of Wagga Wagga Airport.
