Relaxing & Enchanting
Hobart is renowned for being the quietest capital in Australia, in the quietest state of the country, Tasmania. Nevertheless, the city receives its fair share of visitors every year, many of which use the town as a gateway to the natural frontier of Tasmania’s inner-region. However, before and after venturing through Tasmania’s untamed heartland, tourists will certainly find many rewarding experiences in the city of Hobart, which will no doubt capture the mind and enhance the spirit.
Plenty to See
Hobart is home to a plethora of historic structures and architectural marvels, not to mention a host of modern entertainment to boot. The city rests calmly on the banks of the Derwent River, just eight kilometres downstream from the original penal colony of 1804.
Unless tourists are lucky enough to be on a yacht partaking in the famous Sydney to Hobart yacht race, then traveling to Hobart by boat is not really an option. However, there is a ferry service from Devonport to Australia’s mainland, which is about three hours drive from the capital. Therefore, most travel between other major Australian cities and Hobart is done by air. Hobart has an efficient international airport resting just 15kms from the centre of town.
Once in the city, getting from hotel to landmark and back again is extremely easy due to the relatively neat layout of this small settlement, and the efficient public transport options available. Travelling by rental car or by bus are the most viable options, although taxis are provided by the city too.
Hobart: Must See and Do
The Salamanca Markets are regarded as Hobart’s premier attraction, although it only operates on the weekend. Plenty of different merchandise waits patiently in the many stalls of the former whaling quarter of Hobart, but visitors need to be wary not to get lost in this market maze. Salamanca Markets offer restaurants, art workshops, handicrafts, and souvenir stands.
Battery Point is located just behind the popular Salamanca Markets. Many visitors travel from the market to Battery Point each weekend to explore the historic sandstone buildings on display.
The 'Royal Tasmanian' Botanical Gardens
On foot, visitors can travel from the heart of Hobart to the town’s most prized attraction – the Botanical Gardens. Officially named the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, this inspiring attraction is the second oldest of its kind in the country, and is home to a large range of plant species and recreation areas.
The botanical gardens aren’t the only place to witness stunning landscapes. Mount Wellington is the tallest mountain overlooking Hobart, located just a few kilometres from the downtown area. It contains the region’s most astonishing views, especially on a cool autumn or spring day. Nature lovers should, nay must, spend part of their Hobart holiday on Mount Wellington.
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery may not be the most outstanding museum in the country, but it does contain some magnificent exhibitions on Australia’s Antarctic events and history.
If museums are the flavour of the month, then visitors shouldn’t miss the Maritime Museum of Tasmania. It is located in the Carnegie Building, and boasts some interesting collections of the boating and fishing history of Hobart and the state of Tasmania.
More to See
However, these are just the cream of the crop when it comes to Hobart’s attractions. Other popular places to visit and activities to experience include the Peppermint Bay Cruise, Wrest Point Casino, the Cadbury Chocolate Factory, Museum of Old and New Art and Runnymede. In addition, just outside Hobart lay Tasmania’s best wineries, including Moorilla and Coal Valley.
Hobbart: Our Year-Round Weather Forecast
Due to the city’s abundance of sites, and relatively stable weather conditions, visitors can travel to Hobart at any time of the year. However, this largely depends on the taste of the individual.
Some like it warm
The best time to visit Hobartaccording to its climate is during the warmer months. That is generally between September and April. The average maximum temperature during this time is around 20°C, although highs do get close to 30°C on a regular basis during December and January. Tourists coming from the northern areas of mainland Australia may find the nights still somewhat cool, even in summer. Therefore, bringing some warmer clothes to sleep in may prove beneficial.
In the winter... Bring a sweater!
Unfortunately for Hobart, the tourist numbers do tend to drop off quite dramatically during the cooler months of the year (May to August). The town only receives about five hours of daylight a day, and temperatures usually hover between 4°C and 8°C in July. Snow isn’t common atsea level for Hobart, but parts of the city that reside on the slopes of Mount Wellington receive snowfall more frequently.
Aside from the town’s climatic influences, Hobart is also frequented by tourists at New Years. This is because the Sydney to Hobart yacht race terminates at Hobart’s Constitution Docks, which is where thousands of people flock to count in the New Year and view the yachts completing their treacherous journey down the southeast Australian coastline. Hotels should be booked weeks in advance, as Hobart also hosts the popular Summer Festival between New Years and half way through January.
