Paro is a historic Bhutanese town lying on Bhutan’s most picturesque valley that bears the town’s name. It is the site of the country’s lone international airport and of the headquarters of Bhutan’s national airline. It is a quiet and peaceful town of idyllic sights, richly decorated buildings, historical edifices and sacred sites.

Traditional Architecture and Food

In Paro’s main street are ornately decorated buildings of typical Bhutanese architecture. This is the place to shop for authentic Bhutanese souvenirs and to gorge yourself with fresh delectable Bhutanese dishes. If you are in for a hot food adventure you might want to sample ema-datshi, Bhutan’s national dish which is a chili and cheese stew served with rice.

Monasteries and Other Religious Sites

Monasteries of great spiritual relevance in this picturesque town are the main tourist drawers. The most famous of these monasteries is Taktsang Monastery, which is perched high up on a 1,200-meter cliff. Visiting this famed monastery, which is unofficially used as Bhutan’s symbol, is a test of one’s determination and vigor because it can only be reached by taking a 2 to 3 hour uphill walk from the monastery’s parking lot.

Another religious site in this historical town is Rinpung Dzong, a monastery-fortress overlooking the Paro valley. This monastery, which played a vital part in Bhutanese history during the time of Tibetan invasions, has a rare collection of masks and costumes some of which are several centuries old. Also in Paro is Drakhapo a monastic complex also perched on a cliff.

Museum and Royal Residence

On a hill above Rinpung  Dzong is Ta Dzong  an ancient watchtower that has been transformed into the National Museum of Bhutan an important repository of Bhutan artifacts. Ugyenpelri Palace, which can be accessed through a medieval bridge below the Ta Dzong, is the regal residence of the royal family in Paro and another must see in this laid back historic town.
