Things to do in Harbin

Harbin is the beautiful capital of China’s Heilongjiang Province, and with its fascinating Russian influence, it’s not your typical Chinese city. This famous “Ice City” is a playground where your winter wonderland dreams can come true. But it’s also home to Russian architecture, bathhouses, Siberian tigers, tasty food, and plenty of destinations for all travellers.

You’ll feel like you’ve travelled to more than one country when you wander the streets of Harbin’s old quarter. See the interesting shades of yellow, red, green, and white colours of the city’s fine Russian buildings. One perfect example is the stunning Saint Sophia Cathedral, which is now an architectural art museum for you to visit.

Other incredible sights are the Harbin Jewish New Synagogue, the Temple of Bliss, and the massive Wen Miao Confucius Temple. Soak up more culture at the Harbin Flood Control Monument and Heilongjiang Provincial Museum. Then go to the Baroque district of Laodowai and taste some of the oldest traditional food of Harbin.

If you want a break from the city, hail a cab and head to the exciting Siberian Tiger Park. This must-see destination is perfect for animal lovers and those who want to feel their heart race during feeding time and when they get closer to your tour bus.

For a more relaxing time with nature, enjoy a stroll along the long tree-covered walkways of Riverbank Park. Feel closer to your loved one with a romantic walk at Sun Island and Zhaolin Park during the warmer months. In Sun Island, you can even ride a gondola high above the Songhua River for a breathtaking view of the city.

If you want more fantastic views of Harbin, stop by the Dragon TV Tower too. You can even feel like an action star in the sky when you strap on a harness and walk outside the top of the tower.

Of course, you have to visit Harbin during winter so you can enjoy the incredible Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival. During the festival, you can’t miss the Ice Festival in Zhaolin Park and also the Ice and Snow World during sunset. See the massive displays at the Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Fair. And after walking around in the cold, feel warm and cosy in any of the city’s saunas and bathhouses.

Other amazing festivals in the city are the Harbin Summer Music Festival and Harbin International Beer Festival. But if shopping is your favourite event, bring your wallet to Guogeli Dajie, Zhongyang Dajie, Churin Shopping Center, and Indian Street.
