Things to do in Mombasa
The city of Mombasa is Kenya’s main tourist destination. Found on the eastern coastline of Kenya and next to the Indian Ocean, Mombasa’s fantastic location made it a popular travel destination for its beaches. The city also has plenty of other stunning nature attractions, historical sites, diverse wildlife and marine life, world-class hotels, and a carefree atmosphere.
Relive the past and make your way to Mvita. After arriving in Mombasa Old Town, you will find Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take as many pictures as you want of the area because this place doesn’t need any filter to make it look vintage and stunning. Then explore the rest of Old Town and enjoy its many different styles of design.
Other landmarks you can’t miss are the Hindu temples, namely Shree Kutch Satsang Temple, New Dwarikadham Temple, and Lord Shiva Temple. Don’t forget to see the huge elephant tusks towering over Moi Avenue.
Immerse yourself in Mother Nature next and take a stroll along Uhuru Garden. There’s also the Bamburi Forest Trails and Butterfly Park, Colobus Conservation, and Mtwapa Creek. Visit Haller Park too and you’ll get the chance to see the local animals like giraffes, hippos, and monkeys.
Continue your trip to the beautiful landscapes of Shimba Hills National Reserve and experience its top attractions like the elephant habitat. If you are more into marine animals, enjoy diving at Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve where you can see underwater creatures and coral reefs.
For more water adventures, cool off in Mombasa’s Wild Waters Park or go kayaking in Avicennia Island. Get a nice tan or go swimming in the emerald waters of the Funzi sandbar. Experience a boat ride unlike when you step onto the Arabic 'Dhow' boats to cruise the waters and feel the ocean breeze in your hair.
When in Mombasa, you have to check out their stunning beaches. There’s the popular Diani Beach and Shelly Beach waiting for you. English Point in Mkomani is also a favourite for many, and here you will also get a great view of Old Town.
Leave footprints in the sand with your special someone at Nyali Beach. Enjoy a cold beer or a refreshing madafu (green coconut) in Bamburi Beach. And for some peace and quiet, you should head straight to Shanzu Beach and Tiwi Beach.
Do you enjoy partying until morning? Mombasa has plenty of hot spots for you. Mtwapa Club Lambada is world-famous. Other usual nightlife hangouts are Bob’s, Bela Vista, and Sheba. Feel the bass drop and find more clubs in the city centre, Mtwapa, Nyali, and Mamburi.
If shopping gets your heart pumping, get your money’s worth and spend your Kenyan Shilling around the city. Take your pick from Nyali City Mall, Cineplex Plaza, Oasis Mall, and Kongowea Market. Central Mvita and part of the Haile Selassie Road also have colourful shops, stalls, and street food if you’re starting to feel peckish. Take note that great souvenirs for ladies are Mombasa Sandals and gorgeous African fabrics like lesos and kikois.
